COVID-19 AND LATIN AMERICA EVENT SERIES

In the midst of the coronavirus global pandemic, hemispheric collaboration has never been more urgent. As the virus continues to spread through the Western Hemisphere, the United States and Latin America need to work together to slow the spread across borders. This raises important questions such as:

  • How can the United States and the international community play a greater role to halt the spread of the virus?

  • How are Congress and other US agencies coordinating with Latin America to combat Covid-19?

  • How are regional experts collaborating with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health experts? What are best practices the United States has learned from or shared with the region?

  • What are some barriers that the United States still faces in producing a successful vaccine? How much longer could it take to share the vaccine with other countries?

On March 26, the Dialogue’s Congressional Program will host an in-depth discussion on these and other topics with Congresswoman Donna Shalala (D-FL, 27). Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, will moderate the conversation.

Congresswoman Shalala was the longest-serving secretary of health and human services in US history, serving under President Bill Clinton. She joined the Dialogue as a member in 2001. In addition to having an extensive background in health policy, academia, and public service, she also was president and CEO of the Clinton Foundation. Prior to heading the foundation, she was president of the University of Miami. In 2018, she became the representative for Florida’s 27th district, which includes the city of Miami and surrounding municipalities in Miami-Dade County.
