Latin America has abundant energy resources. In Brazil, the “Transfer of Rights” auction alone will open up billions of barrels of reserves for oil exploration. In Colombia, the government proposed a royalties reform that could improve local community buy-in for energy projects. And clean energy auctions have led to increased capacity for wind and solar projects, particularly in Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Argentina. But policies in many countries also pose challenges to investment. Mexico’s decision to renegotiate a natural gas pipeline contract alarmed investors. Argentina’s upcoming presidential election increases uncertainty for energy investments. Meanwhile, Venezuelan oil production is plummeting amid US sanctions, though PDVSA’s US subsidiary CITGO, run by the Juan Guaidó government, has succeeded in sourcing crude from other countries.
What is the outlook for energy supply, demand and trade in Latin America? The Third Annual Latin America Energy Conference will gather policymakers from the US and Latin America, industry players and energy experts to discuss the region’s key energy policy issues.
The conference is by invitation only and on the record.
