Over the past three years, over 1.5 million Venezuelans have fled their country in what is likely the largest such exodus in Western Hemisphere history. Many Venezuelan exiles are professionals who have successfully established themselves elsewhere in Latin America, the United States, and beyond. Increasingly, however, Venezuelan refugees and migrants are fleeing a humanitarian crisis in desperate circumstances. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Cucuta, Colombia—where thousands of Venezuelans cross the border every day. In Colombia and across Latin America, policymakers are now scrambling to accommodate a ballooning Venezuelan population, one that is only likely to grow.
To discuss the nature of the Venezuelan migration crisis, the responses by neighboring governments, multilateral organizations and civil society, and strategies for future action, the Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to partner with Visión Democrática to present “The Many Faces of Venezuelan Migration: Challenges and Solutions.”
