Researchers have been studying the evolution of smart cities around the world, assessing more than a decade of experience with a range of new technologies and practices. Where adopted, some digital solutions could improve quality-of-life indicators in cities by 10–30 percent across sectors like healthcare, energy, transport and security, according to recent estimates. However, some major metropolitan areas are lagging behind others, and their unique circumstances require closer attention. How has the concept of the smart city evolved around the world over the past decade? How do cities in Latin America and the Caribbean compare to other metropolitan areas globally? What factors stand in the way of advancing the smart city agenda more quickly in the region? What key lessons should regional policymakers take away from experiences with smart cities to date?
