Why Are Early Warning Systems a Fundamental Tool in the Schooling and Learning Recovery Agenda?

The suspension of in-person classes in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic brought about some of the most serious consequences ever experienced by school systems across the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. Eighteen months have elapsed since the virus outbreak in our region, during the greater part of which schools were closed or providing hybrid education with arguably limited effectiveness. As a result, countries are starting to document the negative effects of the pandemic on several educational outcomes, from a significant increase in drop-out rates to sizeable learning losses or a dramatic impact on students’ socio-emotional development.

Inter-American Dialogue (IAD) and the World Bank Group (WBG) are launching the “Recovering Schooling and Learning after Covid-19 in LAC” series of virtual, open webinars. These events are a space for knowledge exchange across LAC to help countries benefit from best practices shared by their regional peers.

In this context, IAD’s Education Program and WBG’s LAC Education Division will host the first webinar of this series entitled, Recovering Schooling and Learning after Covid-19 in LAC Series #1 – Early Warning Systems: Why Are They a Fundamental Tool in the Schooling and Learning Recovery Agenda?

In this first public webinar, we hope to present innovative programs in the region that have implemented early warning systems that both identify students at risk of dropping out of school, as well as obtain timely information on the root causes of this problem.
