Event information

In Nicaragua, massive street protests have sparked a widening social movement demanding political change. Students and the elderly have been joined by farmers, the private sector, and civil society organizations. They have demanded greater political freedom, the release of hundreds of people who are detained, and the resignation of President Ortega himself.

After weeks of public demonstrations in the streets, more than forty people have been killed, there has been full censorship of media, and rising citizen anger. Now Nicaraguans are certain of political reforms, though the opposition movement is still taking shape.

To discuss these trends and what lies ahead, the Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to host a panel discussion on Friday, May 4th with Cristiana Chamorro and Manuel Orozco.
