Event information

Politically motivated imprisonment of opposition leaders, human rights defenders, activists and ordinary citizens has risen sharply in the post-Covid19 period, driven by increasing political deterioration from authoritarian practices across Latin America. The most emblematic examples of this chilling repression are found in Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Cuba. However, concerning patterns of political imprisonment are emerging across the region, with a growing number of cases reported in other countries.

In observance of International Human Rights Day, the ongoing crisis of arbitrary detentions and politically motivated imprisonment calls for urgent attention and a serious response from democratic governments and human rights advocates.

The Inter-American Dialogue and Freedom House invite you to join us on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. ET, for a panel discussion addressing current trends in political imprisonment, strategies to mitigate and condemn this practice, and ways to amplify diplomatic pressure to secure the release of individuals unjustly deprived of liberty for political reasons in the region.
