Event information

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the world at a pace that exceeds the ability of our democratic institutions to respond, making it very difficult to have predictable, clear, and fair rules to regulate and enforce norms around its use. Despite the benefits that AI technology brings, without proper regulation and oversight, it risks contributing to polarization and disinformation, amplifying information lacking integrity and of poor quality, and may perpetuate inequalities.

Join us for this virtual event co-organized by the Dialogue’s Rule of Law Program and Luminate, on Monday, December 9, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ET to discuss the challenges that AI poses to the rule of law in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our expert panel will delve into key findings of an upcoming report by Luminate about citizens’ perceptions of the impact of AI on democracies in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. What are the key implications of AI for democracy, human rights, and social justice? What is the impact of AI on inequality? How is AI used in public security strategies and judicial decision making, and what risks does it pose, in particular due to algorithmic bias? Who is regulating AI, what tools are available, and which are needed? What roles do international bodies, including the UN, play in establishing governance, and to what extent are voices of the Global South heard?
