On June 1, Mexico will hold a pivotal national vote that could reshape its federal and local judiciary—an unprecedented election that has sparked vigorous domestic debate and raised concerns abroad. More than 1,600 judicial positions, including seats on the Supreme Court, will be subject to popular election, marking a historic shift in the administration of justice nationwide.

This webinar will provide a clear, accessible overview of what is at stake. How will the new system function? What are the short- and long-term implications for judicial independence, the rule of law, and efforts to combat organized crime? Most importantly, how might these sweeping changes affect Mexico’s institutional stability and its cooperation with the United States?

Join the Mexico Program at the Inter-American Dialogue on Wednesday, May 28, from 10:30 – 11:30 am ET for a virtual discussion on the legal and political context behind the judicial election, the risks and expectations surrounding the June 1 vote, and its potential consequences for the broader U.S.-Mexico relationship.
