Just over a decade ago, the four members of the Pacific Alliance—Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Chile—articulated their common interest in more extensive engagement with China and other Asian economies, and to this end worked to harmonize their own trade and investment regulations. The bloc’s role in cross-Pacific outreach has lost some momentum in recent years as new leaders took the four member nations in different policy directions. But bilateral ties between these countries and Asia, though still underpinned by trade complementarity, have continued to grow and evolve, as Asian companies establish ever more extensive footprints and partnerships across economic sectors. Among these, Chinese companies continue to play an outsize role.
On December 1, the Inter-American Dialogue’s Asia and Latin America Program, East Consulting, and Cámara de Comercio Peruano-China, will convene top experts from each of the Pacific Alliance member nations to consider the evolution of China’s and broader Asian overseas investment in these four countries over the past decade, any prospects for future intra-bloc collaboration, and how these relationships are likely to continue evolving in the coming years, amid a period of growing global uncertainty.
