As extreme weather, investor demands, conflicts with local communities, and sweeping climate legislation escalate, industries that have thrived in a carbon-based economy have dynamic opportunities to rise as main players in the green economy and energy transition. However, this shifting landscape presents manifold risks as well. While many companies are taking action to reduce the immediate risks facing their assets and supply chains, others lag behind in taking an inclusive approach that considers the social effects of the energy transition, the cascading effects of climate litigation on the corporate sector, and other community and human rights implications.
In this context, the Inter-American Dialogue will host a private event with Victoria Gama and Arun Pillai-Essex of Verisk Maplecroft, as well Alejandro Martínez de Hoz, to discuss how industries of the energy transition can turn these obstacles into opportunities. Speakers will outline their analysis regarding previous consultations, building relationships with and adding value to local communities, the effects of climate litigation on local populations and industry, and other concerns related to transition investments such as critical minerals and renewable energy generation. Following a 15-minute speaker presentation, Daniela Stevens, director of the Dialogue’s Energy Program, will open the floor for a moderated audience Q&A discussion.
The event will take place in person on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM EDT at the Dialogue’s office in Washington DC (1155 15th Street NW, Ste 800) and will be open to the Dialogue’s Corporate Program and Energy Committee members, as well as other select guests. This meeting will be held under Chatham House Rules and is by invitation only.
