Presentation of the 2016 Bertelsmann Transformation Index

According to certain indicators, 2015 saw important and complex changes in the quality of governance in Latin America. Many markers show that the ongoing economic downturn has impacted politics in most countries, threatening a precarious middle class. Meanwhile, growing instability, violence, and organized crime have fueled tensions between democracy and security in some areas. And while the state of democratic and economic governance varies greatly across the region, several countries have declined according to a number of measures. The indicators alone, however, may not tell the whole story. Towards that end, the Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to host a discussion on these reported trends and various indicators, featuring a presentation of the 2016 BTI results for Latin America.
