Brazil’s energy and mining industries are facing new challenges. The decline in global commodity prices and new investment opportunities around the world are leading to more intense competition for capital. In the oil and gas sector, the US shale revolution and Mexican energy reform have opened up new investment opportunities as the collapse in oil prices is leading many companies to rein in spending. Mining companies are also tightening their budgets in response to the decline in prices of metals and minerals. In an effort to attract investment in this new environment, some governments are offering stronger fiscal incentives and revising regulations.
This roundtable discussion, organized by the Inter-American Dialogue, Universidade Federal Rio de Janeiro, and Instituto Brasileiro de Petróleo, will focus on Brazil’s ability to compete for investment in the current global and Latin American context. Participants will discuss Brazil’s regulatory environment, local content rules and fiscal policies for the energy and mining sectors. The half-day roundtable will be preceded by an opening night dinner for speakers and select guests.
