Imprisonment as a form of political persecution has been one of the tools of the Nicaraguan government to keep its population in a state of fear and submission. The imprisonment and mistreatment of Nicaragua’s women leaders was part of the Ortega government’s strategy. A little more than a year after the expulsion of 33 former women prisoners out of the 222 who were released on February 9, 2023, and in celebration of of International Women’s Day, the Inter-American Dialogue, the Sé Humano campaign, and the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), will provide an opportunity for these women to share their testimonies. Journalist Sabrina Duque, co-author of Freedom Behind Bars: How Eleven Nicaraguan Women Political Prisoners Survived Wrongful Convictions will discuss with Evelyn Pinto and Cinthia Samantha Padilla Jirón their experiences and those of other women leaders in the country. Today, there remain 19 women political prisoners in Nicaraguan jails.

Join us on March 8, 2024 from 1:00 to 2:15 PM EST to hear in-person testimonies from 11 Nicaraguan women political prisoners. There will also be the option to listen to the event live on Zoom.
