En un momento en que los países alrededor del mundo buscan abordar el crecimiento en las necesidades de energía y transporte, los vehículos eléctricos representan uno de los caminos más importantes hacia el mejoramiento de la seguridad energética y la reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. El número de automóviles en circulación a nivel mundial se duplicará y llegará a más de 2 mil millones para el 2030, y el transporte continúa siendo una de las fuentes de emisiones energéticas que más rápido crece en el mundo. En América Latina, la penetración de vehículos eléctricos en el mercado está en crecimiento, pero todavía representa tan sólo una pequeña porción de la venta total de vehículos.

¿Cómo pueden las políticas adecuadas expandir el uso de vehículos eléctricos, mejorar la calidad del aire en ciudades latinoamericanas y reducir el uso de combustibles fósiles? En el segundo Foro de Transporte Limpio en Bogotá, reuniremos a representantes del gobierno local y federal, del sector privado, del ámbito académico y ONGs en América Latina para analizar los impedimentos y oportunidades para la promoción del uso de vehículos eléctricos en la región. As countries around the world seek to address growing energy and transportation needs, electric vehicles represent one of the most important paths to improving energy security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, the number of cars in circulation is set to double to more than two billion by 2030, and transportation remains the world’s fastest-growing source of energy-related emissions. In Latin America, electric vehicle penetration is growing but still represents a tiny share of overall vehicle sales.

How can the right policies accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles to improve air quality in Latin American cities and reduce the use of fossil fuels? At the Second Annual Latin America Clean Transport Forum in Bogota, we will bring together representatives of Latin American governments, the private sector, academia, and NGOs to discuss impediments and opportunities to promoting the use of electric vehicles in the region. The Inter-American Dialogue report, Green Transportation: The Outlook for Electric Vehicles in Latin America will be distributed at the forum in English and Spanish.
