Event information

On November 19, 2019, the OAS High-Level Commission on Nicaragua released its report, in response to the General Assembly’s June 2019 mandate calling for an assessment of the political situation in the country. The report was tough and troubling. It maintains that the actions the Nicaraguan Government has taken since the crisis erupted in April 2018 violated the rights guaranteed in the 1987 Constitution. The report also asserts that such actions “are giving rise to an alteration of the constitutional regime that seriously impairs the democratic order in Nicaragua.”

The release of this report comes amid a worsening crisis in the country. Civil society actors and the press have denounced increased violence by the government. On November 14, sixteen activists were imprisoned in one single afternoon and both the church and protestors have been targets of government persecution.

The Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to host a discussion to analyze the report’s findings as well as its possible impact for Nicaragua. Please join us for this timely discussion.
