The Global Rule of Law Exchange annual conference will be held in São Paulo, Brazil, on 18 and 19 April 2016. This conference is jointly organised by the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and the Getulio Vargas Foundation, supported by the Exchange’s global partner, Jones Day.
The conference will consider a number of urgent and current issues relating to the rule of law in Latin America, including corruption, the conduct of trials and ways to ensure judicial independence.
Distinguished speakers from Brazil will include the former President of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former President of Bolivia Carlos D. Mesa, Supreme Court Justices Ministers Gilmar Mendes and Teori Zavascki, as well as Beto Vasconcelos (National Secretary for Justice, Ministry of Justice). There will be similar high-level speakers from elsewhere in the region and beyond.
This Panel Discussion will build on the opening presentation and address some of the main rule of law challenges currently affecting Latin America, including the role of organized crime, impunity, corruption, human rights, the role of the state, and natural resource use.
