With a stagnant economy, a rapidly spreading multi-billion dollar corruption scandal, and single digit approval ratings, Brazil’s president Dilma Rousseff is being sorely tested. Mass demonstrations protesting her government and calling for her impeachment are scheduled in cities across the country this weekend. What happens in Brazil in the weeks and months ahead will have enormous implications for the entire region. Many are worried about what the consequences would be of her possible removal from office. But even if she manages to avoid that fate, it is far from clear how Rousseff will be able to deal with a series of acute political and economic problems and regain a greater measure of public support and confidence.
The Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to host a wide-ranging discussion on Brazil’s political and economic future.
