Although the student and opposition protests that shook Venezuela last spring have subsided, their causes have not been addressed. The economy continues to worsen, polarization is increasing, crime remains at record levels, and opposition leaders are still in jail. There are no promising signs that government policies have been successful in reversing the deterioration. Can the international community be more helpful in ameliorating the crisis? What can external actors do to facilitate political dialogue, push for more accountable and independent judicial institutions, and set a realistic time frame for conflict resolution that would help the country move beyond its current impasse?
