China’s involvement in Brazilian energy has grown significantly since the early 2000s, driven in part by China’s rising demand for energy and the rapid internationalization of Chinese firms. China has increasingly sought new stakes in oil and gas ventures, most recently participating in the first bidding round for Brazil’s extensive pre-salt oil reserves. Chinese banks and firms have also expanded financing and investment in Brazilian hydro, solar, wind and power projects. The future of this relationship has major implications for the growth of Brazil’s energy sector. To what extent will China-Brazil ties grow in the coming years? And what obstacles remain to increasing trade and investment?

The Inter-American Dialogue, the China-Brazil Business Council (CEBC), and the São Paulo Federation of Industries (FIESP) are delighted to co-sponsor a discussion on China’s engagement in Brazil’s energy sector.
