Event information

One of the most surprising developments in Latin America over the past several years has been Ecuador’s changing political and economic landscape. Lenin Moreno, president since May 2017 from the Alliance PAIS party, has undone many of the populist policies and politics of his predecessor, Rafael Correa, whose decade-long rule resulted in severe economic problems, tensions with Washington, and alignment with the leftist regional group ALBA.

The Dialogue is pleased to welcome President Moreno, who will discuss how his administration is addressing a variety of major challenges, including boosting the economy, fostering greater social development, strengthening human rights, protecting the environment, and improving the inter-American system.

President Moreno, who served as Correa’s vice president from 2007 to 2013, has replaced his predecessor’s confrontational style with more democratic politics, worked closely with the private sector, and taken steps to open up the economy, recently reaching an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. US relations with Ecuador have improved considerably since Moreno took office. Among other notable foreign policy shifts, the Moreno administration has assumed a tougher stance against the Maduro regime in Venezuela.

Following brief opening remarks, President Moreno will engage in a wide-ranging exchange with participants.
