On February 4, Salvadorans will head to the polls to elect a new president. The election comes at a pivotal moment for a country that continues to feature high levels of crime and violence, a stagnant economy, corruption, and broad disaffection with the main political parties since the end of the civil war in 1992. Lack of economic opportunities and insecurity drive migration flows. What steps should the next government take to deal with these and other challenges? How should El Salvador pursue a constructive relationship with the United States? What other issues are on the country’s foreign policy agenda?
To discuss these and other issues, the Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to welcome Carlos Calleja, a business leader and candidate for president of El Salvador from the ARENA Party, for an open, wide-ranging exchange.
