The political debate in Honduras has grown increasingly tense as the country approaches presidential and congressional elections this coming November.
In a process characterized by disagreements between the government and opposition over the handling of the electoral process, a broader climate of political polarization, and the anxieties from previous electoral fraud, the role of the international community will be more critical than ever.
More importantly, the winner of the election will confront significant challenges seeking to build unity and economic opportunities amidst future declining migration and remittances.
What are the obstacles that could make free and fair elections difficult to carry out? What are the main issues that presidential candidates are raising and that are of interest to the Honduran people? In what ways are the Organization of American States, the United States, and the European Union playing a supporting role to ensure a transparent electoral process in Honduras?
Join the Inter-American Dialogue on September 9 from 9:15 AM to 11:00 AM ET for a conversation on Honduran politics and elections with Gabriela Castellanos, Deborah Ullmer (NDI), and Manuel Orozco, moderated by Eric Jacobstein, a senior fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue.
