Marcos Ponce Jara, professor at the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí in Manta: “Ecuador’s ongoing energy crisis, exacerbated by the worst drought in 61 years, has laid bare the country’s deep reliance on hydropower, which supplies nearly 90 percent of its electricity. Despite promises of reform, including President Daniel Noboa’s ‘Ley No Más Apagones,’ power outages continue, with some lasting up to 12 hours. While Noboa initially pledged to resolve the issue with a $300 million investment and new hydroelectric projects, progress has been slow, and the government now faces mounting pressure…”
