How Important Is Bolivia’s New Natural Gas Find?

Nelson Altamirano, professor of economics in the Department of Finance, Economics and Accounting at National University in San Diego: “The discovery of the Mayaya X-1 gas field, which potentially may hold 1.7 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas, by itself is too small to support a large export project comparable to Bolivia’s Margarita mega field (discovered in 1998 with 13 TFC) or Peru’s Camisea gas field (discovered in 1986 with 13.4 TFC.) A truly significant export basin would need eight Mayayas, which would require more drilling and more investment. However, given the poor exploration record of the national oil company, YPFB, Mayaya represents the largest finding in the last 25 years. Given its distant and remote location in Alto Beni municipality (in northern La Paz department), it requires a minimum $1 billion to $2 billion of investment into other exploration wells, geological studies and…”
