Cecilia Aguillon, nonresident fellow at the Institute of the America: “It would be wise for Ecopetrol to accelerate its race to clean up its energy portfolio despite last year’s profit decline, which had nothing to do with President Petro’s green mandate, but rather with a reduction in global oil prices and a national fiscal reform. The fiscal policy change increased Ecopetrol’s federal tax obligation and negatively affected its net profit. High inflation and operating cost increases added to the profit shortfall, even when Ecopetrol reported its highest level of fossil fuel production in several years. While Ecopetrol states that exploration of oil and gas will continue to grow without new exploration permits, so will its portfolio of renewable energy. Growth of electricity sales from large scale solar and wind projects may not cover the entire profit decline, but it can help decrease local demand for oil and gas while…”
