Job Description:

The Inter-American Dialogue seeks a Reporter for the Latin America Advisor to assist in the editorial production and dissemination of the Dialogue’s daily publication, as well as the weekly Energy Advisor and biweekly Financial Services Advisor.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, and candidates based in the Washington, DC area are preferred.

The Latin America Advisor is the Inter-American Dialogue’s daily flagship publication. Focusing on the Western Hemisphere’s most pressing economic, political and business issues, the publications are targeted to informed CEOs and leaders invested in Latin America’s future. Many of the world’s most respected and fastest-growing companies subscribe. The Inter-American Dialogue’s signature publication series contains top news stories and foremost expert analysis from across the Western Hemisphere. Published every business day, the Latin America Advisor is distributed to a distinguished membership of informed corporate leaders, scholars, and government officials invested in Latin America’s development and future.  

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Solicit and secure original commentaries from experts including senior-level business leaders, economists, policy analysts, academics and government officials for the Advisor publications’ Q&A features
  • Maintain, expand and diversify a contact database of editorial sources
  • Work with the editorial team to plan content
  • Write stories on breaking news and take assignments to cover a wide range of business, economic and political issues
  • Copyedit and proofread written material
  • Take primary responsibility for the production of the weekly Energy Advisor publication, managing the editorial process from Q&A and story selection and writing through final publication
  • Translate content from Spanish and sometimes Portuguese into English
  • Assist in the publications’ distribution, which includes posting content online and the use of social media to expand the publications’ reach
  • Cover events pertaining to Latin America and the Caribbean and write related articles
  • Develop ideas for features and in-depth analysis articles on issues of interest to readers
  • Cover editorial duties of other Advisor team members during absences
  • Assist other Dialogue departments in tasks including posting and proofreading content on the institutional website and assisting at Dialogue events such as the annual gala

Qualifications:

  • This is an entry-level position for an individual with a demonstrated interest in journalism and in business, economic and political issues, specifically relating to Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required; time spent living in Latin America and/or the Caribbean is a plus.
  • Must have strong writing skills—preferably news writing—and be effective in interviewing senior executives and government officials in person, via email and over the phone.
  • Must follow and have a broad understanding of news developments in Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Skilled at quick-turnaround research and writing assignments with good news judgment
  • Proficiency with desktop publishing (InDesign) and HTML (MailChimp) would be a plus

Successful candidates will have the ability to work autonomously with minimal direct supervision, be reliable and highly organized, as well as have superior attention to detail and the ability to produce quality work while meeting deadlines. Other requirements include a bachelor’s degree, experience writing, copyediting and proofreading, and adeptness at Internet research, using email, social media, and Microsoft and Adobe products.

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary for DC area candidates is US$50,000-52,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications. Competitive benefits package.
