Tamara Taraciuk Broner, director of the Rule of Law Program at the Inter-American Dialogue, spoke with Monocle about Venezuela’s upcoming presidential election on Sunday July 28, 2024.
COMMENTS FROM TARACIUK BRONER:
“There is absolutely no doubt that the playing field is not leveled and that the government has tried very hard to win this election through repression against opposition, […] independent media and making it hard for people to demonstrate and express themselves. [Yet,] people will mobilize to vote. Every poll indicates that the opposition will win the elections.”
“If the results are recognized and the opposition does win the elections there will be a negotiation. My sense is that people in power today are going to negotiate how to stay in power while the opposition will negotiate to get them out of there. We have to see how the opposition and international community respond to the results on Sunday and what the negotiation is going to look like.”
