    “It’s not enough to have a very nice agreement that international organizations applaud and all the leaders applaud, but the Colombian people have the final word in this one.”

    In the interview, Michael Shifter discusses how the vote on the FARC peace deal was a surprise, why many Colombians voted as they did, and how there is hope that this result may help forge a new consensus around the process.  

    “That’s the core of it. Why don’t they go to jail? Why should they participate in the political system and be eligible for office when they’ve committed these horrible crimes, crimes against humanity according to some human rights groups? And that didn’t sit well with Colombians and its understandable.”
