Dr. Rebecca Bill Chavez, president and CEO of the Inter-American Dialogue, participated in the panel “Regional Security in a Changing Context: Traditional and Non-Traditional Threats” as part of the ParlAmericas Parliamentary Perspectives high-level meetings in preparation for the X Summit of the Americas. The session examined the regional security landscape, addressing traditional threats such as transnational organized crime alongside non-traditional threats, including cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
COMMENTS FROM CHAVEZ:
“It is critical that citizen security is on the agenda at this year’s Summit of the Americas. Crime and violence are a regional challenge and require a regional response. Partnership and cooperation are essential—especially given that 50 percent of homicides are tied to transnational organized crime.”
“The Summit is also an opportunity to focus on gender-based violence, which impacts one in four women in Latin America and the Caribbean. And we must address the widespread predatory behavior online, which increased with the pandemic. Ninety-one percent of women in the region have witnessed online violence against other women. This is not acceptable.”
