From the Remittance Industry Observatory: Mexico’s Digital Payment System and WhatsApp’s RSP Aspirations

This post is also available in: Português Español

We’re pleased to share with you our July 2019 Newsletter.

In this edition, we present a featured Q&A from the Financial Services Advisor regarding Mexico’s new electronic payment platform, Cobro Digital. The CoDi platform, which will allow people to make instant payments from their cellphone without needing to use cash or card, is intended by the government to promote greater financial inclusion in Mexico.

The second article looks at WhatsApp and its potential to enter the remittance market. WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in every Latin American country, and 64% of Latin Americans use it. Despite its potential as a remittance platform, the app would have a way to go and a number of regulatory challenges to overcome.

Finally, we are including several news stories of interest relating to remittances and the remittance industry.

As always, we look forward to your feedback and comments.

Best regards,
Manuel, Laura and Julia
