From the Remittance Industry Observatory: Global Remittance Markets and Mexico’s FinTech Legislation

This post is also available in: Português Español

We’re pleased to share with you our May 2018 newsletter.

This edition looks at recent trends in market competition, considering issues such as the number of RSPs, market share, payer networks, informality, and costs of sending. In general, competitiveness continues to be a work in progress. As a benchmark, we analyzed 14 outbound countries where over 300 RSPs send 70% of transfers and 23 remittance recipient countries which receive 80% of inflows.

We also share information regarding Mexico’s new Fintech law. The law seeks to establish stability and prevent money laundering across a host of emerging technologies in the financial services sector such as crowd funding, crypto currencies and new payment methods. On the topic of remittances, the new law may have an impact on services, as currencies authorized by appropriate institutions are now safer and more clearly regulated, which may promote confidence among both companies and consumers interested in using them. It may also mean more compliance procedures, but that will depend on interpretation and thresholds set for implementation.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter, and as always, we look forward to hearing your comments and recommendations.

Best regards,
Manuel, Laura and Julia
