The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance’s (International IDEA) Council of Member States has selected Kevin Casas-Zamora as the Institute’s new Secretary-General.

International IDEA is an intergovernmental organization that supports sustainable democracy worldwide. Membership in International IDEA is open to governments which demonstrate, by example in their own state, their commitment to the rule of law, human rights, the basic principles of democratic pluralism and strengthening democracy.

Casas-Zamora will be the fifth person to hold the position of Secretary-General at the 24-year-old intergovernmental organization and will be its first leader from Latin America. He will start his five-year term on 1 August 2019.

Kevin Casas-Zamora was the first director of the Inter-American Dialogue’s Peter D. Bell Rule of Law Program and is currently a Non-Resident Senior Fellow for the program.
