On January 6th, president and CEO of the Inter-American Dialogue, Rebecca Bill Chavez, spoke with DW News to discuss what comes next after the capture of Nicolás Maduro.
COMMENTS FROM CHAVEZ:
“One thing to keep in mind is that Delcy Rodríguez has been part of this illegitimate and highly repressive regime. She served as Hugo Chávez’s chief of staff…, and has been present during massive human rights violations.”
“Two other figures who remain worrisome are Diosdado Cabello, the interior minister, and Vladimir Padrino López, the defense minister. Cabello oversees armed groups known as colectivos, which have been deployed to repress dissent. Both Cabello and Padrino López are under U.S. indictment.”
“Providing stability in Venezuela will be incredibly difficult, particularly given the competing armed groups that may exploit the power vacuum. These groups have vested interests in maintaining lawlessness.”
“Another key issue is democracy. We have not heard a long-term plan to reestablish democratic institutions, set an electoral timeline, or address the stolen 2024 election.”
