By Escalating Tensions with Mexico, Donald Trump is Playing with Fire

Mexico is perhaps Washington’s most important bilateral relationship — a complex and tense yet critical set of economic, security, migration and cultural bonds. Within the last 24 hours, the relationship has skittered off the tracks, careening towards potential disaster.

It all began with a planned meeting next week between President Trump and the Mexican President, Enrique Peña Nieto, to begin to discuss the many simmering issues between the two countries, the North American Free Trade Agreement and immigration among them.

Then, the same day that a Mexican delegation came to Washington to lay the groundwork for the meeting, Trump issued an order to build the border wall he has long touted.
