On January 20, 2025, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted a private roundtable discussion with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa. This timely gathering provided valuable insights into President Noboa’s vision for Ecuador and its relationship with the United States, offering participants a deeper understanding of the country’s challenges and opportunities in the years ahead.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Rebecca Bill Chavez underscored the challenges facing Ecuador and the region, including the need to stimulate economic growth, address energy concerns, and tackle violence. She highlighted the Noboa administration’s efforts to address public insecurity by strengthening law enforcement, enhancing regional and international cooperation, and investing in the communities most affected by violence. Chavez also drew attention to the growing influence of transnational criminal networks, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies to address these challenges.
President Noboa emphasized Ecuador’s alignment with the United States and reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing a free trade agreement. He underscored the importance of protecting jobs in both nations while addressing shared security concerns, particularly the issue of drug trafficking, which impacts both Ecuador and the United States.
Recognizing the intersection of youth unemployment and security challenges, President Noboa stressed the need to create alternatives to illicit activities by expanding job opportunities. He outlined his focus on combating narco-terrorism and fostering economic opportunities for young Ecuadorians if reelected.
Addressing the political landscape, President Noboa shared the importance of securing a majority within the National Assembly for the National Democratic Action (ADN) party to effectively advance his governance agenda. He noted that his campaign efforts include supporting his party’s assembly candidates to ensure a strong legislative foundation for his administration.
The conversation concluded with a discussion of Ecuador’s energy future. President Noboa detailed his ongoing and upcoming plans to diversify Ecuador’s energy grid through renewable energy investments, including solar, geothermal, and natural gas projects. He discussed the role of public-private partnerships in expanding and improving infrastructure, including transmission lines.
