Will Argentina’s Debt Plan Help to Bolster Credibility?

  • Argentina’s Economy Ministry on July 6 unveiled its 2026- 2027 financial program, laying out how the government intends to cover roughly $30 billion in foreign-currency debt obligations ahead of the October 2027 presidential election, in which Javier Milei will seek re-election. The plan leans on privatizations, multilateral loans and local debt issuance rather than a return to international bond markets, and it arrives as the country’s risk premium has fallen to its lowest level of Milei’s tenure. What are the implications of initially avoiding a return to international bond markets in favor of privatizations, multilateral loans and local debt issuance to cover Argentina’s financing needs?
