What Will Keiko Fujimori’s Gov’t Mean for Peru?

  • Peru’s National Jury of Elections on Friday declared conservative Keiko Fujimori the winner of the country’s June 7 presidential runoff election. Fujimori won the election by a razor-thin margin of about a quarter of a percentage point. Her opponent, leftist Roberto Sánchez, has alleged ballot manipulation, though he has provided no evidence to back up that claim. What will Fujimori’s government mean for Peru? How stable will her government be, given the close election and that she will be the country’s ninth president in a decade? What policies is Fujimori likely to pursue after she takes office on July 28, and what influence will the legacy of her father, who ruled Peru from 1990-2000, have on her government?
