What’s at Stake as the ICJ Considers the Essequibo?

  • The International Court of Justice this month held a week’s worth of hearings, aimed at resolving the border dispute between Guyana and Venezuela over the oil-rich Essequibo region, which Guyana administers but Venezuela claims. The ICJ is expected to issue a final judgment on the sovereignty of the contested territory, which is known as “Guayana Esequiba” in Venezuela, later this year, Reuters reported. How important is the case and the ruling for Venezuela and Guyana, and what factors will decide the case? What is the Essequibo region’s significance to Guyana’s and, potentially, Venezuela’s economies? What role might the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which currently has friendly relations with both Caracas and Georgetown, play in resolving the dispute?
