What Factors Are Weighing on Mexico’s Economy?

Carlos Serrano, chief economist at BBVA Mexico: “The main factor explaining the weakness of the Mexican economy is a very significant fall in investment. During the January-September period, this indicator declined by 7.3 percent. The contraction in investment, in turn, explains the very weak pace of job creation. Formal employment, up to November, is growing at only 0.9 percent on an annualized basis. This low rate of job creation has resulted in stagnation in private consumption. In my view, the main factor behind the decline in investment is the perception of institutional deterioration in Mexico. First, the judicial reform resulted in the election of judges and supreme court justices with very limited experience and lack of independence.
