Will Argentina Be Able to Ramp Up Copper Production?

  • Argentine President Javier Milei said earlier this month at the American Business Forum in Miami that Argentina should begin exporting copper, noting that the country “doesn’t export even a single gram” while neighboring Chile earns $20 billion a year from the same mountain range, The Wall Street Journal reported. A national law that bans mining on or near Argentina’s roughly 16,000 glaciers, as well as community concerns over pollution and water scarcity, have prevented Argentina’s copper sector from expanding, according to the newspaper. Under what legal framework and timeline could Milei’s government realistically unlock large-scale copper production in Argentina? To what extent do communities located near major copper deposits in Argentina support mining operations? How does Argentina’s geology and regulatory climate compare to neighboring Chile and Peru for prospective copper mining investors?
