What Can Peruvians Expect of Their New President?

  • Peru’s Congress on Oct. 10 ousted President Dina Boluarte amid a violent crime wave and installed the head of Congress, José Jerí, as the country’s interim president. Within a week of assuming office, Jerí oversaw a series of prison raids in which authorities searched for contraband, and also swore in members of his cabinet, including Ernesto Álvarez as prime minister, Denisse Miralles as economy minister, and Hugo de Zela as foreign minister. He later declared a state of emergency in Lima and neighboring Callao following protests over crime and corruption. What do Jerí’s first actions as president signal about how he will govern during his interim term, which lasts until July? What do his cabinet choices say about his agenda and direction?
