What Does Machado’s Nobel Mean for Venezuela?

  • The Nobel Foundation on Oct. 10 named Venezuelan opposition leader and political activist María Corina Machado as the winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. Machado, who was a top candidate in Venezuela’s 2024 presidential election before being disqualified, won the award “for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” the Nobel Foundation said in a statement. How deserving is Machado of the award? What is the significance of Machado becoming the seventh- ever Nobel Laureate from Latin America, and the first since former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos in 2016? To what extent might Machado’s Nobel Peace Prize affect the international community’s posture toward the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro?
