Jada Thompson, associate professor of agricultural economics and agribusiness at the University of Arkansas: “The New World screwworm (NWS) outbreak has created measurable disruptions in livestock trade between the United States and Mexico. Following detections in Mexico, the United States imposed temporary trade bans on live animal imports, a key supply for U.S. border feedlots. When trade resumed, additional inspection and sanitation protocols slowed cross-border movements and increased compliance costs for exporters. The reduction in the pool of animals eligible for export ultimately curbs the movement and predictability of cattle trade.
