How Prepared Is the Region to Face Hurricanes?

Candice Ramkissoon, senior technical officer at the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute in Trinidad and Tobago: “Hurricane Erin has underscored both the progress made and the persistent gaps in the Caribbean’s hurricane preparedness. Across several countries, volunteer teams were mobilized, shelters readied and transport services, including flights and seaport, suspended ahead of the storm. Yet, Erin revealed key vulnerabilities. Its rapid intensification—a growing climate-driven trend—left shorter preparation windows and stretched existing forecasting systems. Even without a direct landfall, the storm caused coastal flooding, rough surf and significant tourism disruptions, highlighting just how exposed the region remains. Stronger, more coordinated preparedness is critical. This includes upgrading forecasting tools and climate models to better predict rapid intensification and integrating regional data into planning.
