Valeria Vásquez, associate director at Control Risks: “Costa Rica’s upcoming general election will be marked by deep polarization and political fragmentation. Public disillusionment, the proliferation of new parties and the erosion of traditional political structures are likely to create a volatile political environment as the election date approaches. Some names are beginning to emerge as potential contenders for the presidency. Among them is Laura Fernández of the Sovereign People’s Party (PPSO), who has positioned herself as the continuity candidate for President Rodrigo Chaves’ administration. While it is still too early to assess her chances, much will depend on her ability to capture Chaves’ voter base and broaden her appeal. This will be particularly important in addressing voters’ main concerns–most notably, insecurity. In line with this, other potential contenders like Fabricio Alvarado and Álvaro Ramos have also begun outlining their security agendas…”
