Why Are Covid Cases on the Rise in Honduras?

Ricardo Izurieta, chair and professor in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at California State University Dominguez Hills: “The surge in respiratory illnesses in Honduras is driven by the highly contagious Omicron XFG variant, responsible for over a third of current cases, alongside increases in influenza and pneumonia. Seasonal circulation of viruses such as RSV and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, combined with low vaccination coverage and limited health care capacity, has created a serious public health challenge. The government is urging mask use, vaccination, hand hygiene and prompt medical care to prevent overwhelming hospitals. Regionally, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has launched real-time virus tracking tools and strengthened surveillance networks. Countries such as Argentina and Chile have advanced RSV prevention, but Latin America continues to struggle with low health care investment, uneven vaccine…”
