Flores-Macías, professor of government and public policy at Cornell University: “The diplomatic spat between Mexico and El Salvador emerged from what appears to be a misunderstanding from the Mexican government as to the origin of a plane carrying drugs that Mexican authorities seized. Mexican Public Safety Secretary García Harfuch appears to have mentioned the origin of the flight more as a way to showcase Mexico’s ability to track and intercept these flights than to blame the country of origin. However, the faux pas led to a strong reaction by President Bukele, who denied the claim and withdrew his country’s ambassador. The reaction is an indication of the fragility of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
