How Significant is a Mexico-El Salvador Diplomatic Spat?

Flores-Macías, professor of government and public policy at Cornell University: “The diplomatic spat between Mexico and El Salvador emerged from what appears to be a misunderstanding from the Mexican government as to the origin of a plane carrying drugs that Mexican authorities seized. Mexican Public Safety Secretary García Harfuch appears to have mentioned the origin of the flight more as a way to showcase Mexico’s ability to track and intercept these flights than to blame the country of origin. However, the faux pas led to a strong reaction by President Bukele, who denied the claim and withdrew his country’s ambassador. The reaction is an indication of the fragility of the diplomatic ties between the two countries. While Secretary García Harfuch should have been more careful with his language–indeed, there is an important difference between detecting the flight near El Salvador and the flight actually departing from that country–President Bukele’s strong and very public response left little room for…”
