Steven Debipersad, lecturer in economics at Anton de Kom University of Suriname: “Guyana’s upcoming presidential election takes place in a period of unprecedented economic transformation, underpinned by offshore oil discoveries that have dramatically altered the country’s fiscal and development outlook. President Irfaan Ali, representing the ruling People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), enters the race with the advantages of incumbency, a robust growth narrative and expanded public investment. However, managing expectations amid rising inequality and inflationary pressures presents a growing challenge. The opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), with Aubrey Norton as its presidential candidate, is attempting to capitalize on these pressures by advancing a platform centered on redistribution—including substantial public sector wage increases, cash transfers and student stipends financed by oil revenues.
