What Can Mexicans Expect From the New High Court?

María Calderón, senior program associate in the Mexico Program at the Inter-American Dialogue: “The newly constituted Supreme Court in Mexico is expected to handle several high-impact cases with serious implications for the business climate. One of the most consequential is the ongoing tax litigation involving Grupo Salinas, particularly its billionaire owner Ricardo Salinas Pliego, whose companies reportedly owe nearly 70 billion pesos (more than $4.3 billion) in unpaid taxes. The dispute centers on value-added tax misreporting, capital gains and intercompany transfers. The outcome will test the court’s willingness to back strong federal enforcement and could set a precedent for future large-scale tax disputes. The court’s role in tax collection and business regulation will likely expand under this new composition.
